Grand Canyon

We arrived at the Grand Canyon North Rim campground the afternoon of July 12th and set up camp.  Our campsite was BEAUTIFUL!!  We were nestled in the large ponderosa pines - very peaceful.

July 13th - We hiked from the campground to the North Rim Lodge via the Transept Trail - beautiful views of the canyon.  When we arrived at the lodge, we took a short hike on the Bright Angel trail (very narrow!!) and then lounged on the back deck of the lodge overlooking the canyon.

July 14th started out to be a rainy, foggy day; we decided to take the 23 mile Cape Royal drive and see the sights.  What sights we saw!!  We toured ancient pueblo archeology sites and climbed to see the view from Angel's Window at Cape Royal point.

Another foggy view...

And another foggy view...

That's Angel's Window behind Tracy -
Called Angel's Window since you can see the Colorado River through it

Can you see the Colorado River at the bottom?

(I walked very carefully - I don't really like heights!!)

I was sure glad that little guy's Mom asked Dad to move him back from the edge!!
We started July 15th out with a picnic at a beautiful site just off the road on the way to the lodge from the campground.  After our picnic, we went to the lodge (only place we could get a cell signal), and then found a nature trail bisecting the lodge trail and the Transept trail.  We saw all kinds of wildlife, including a Kaibab Squirrel (didn't get a picture ourselves; he moved WAY too fast!)

First deer seen on the Nature Trail

Deer was really close to us - we didn't bother her a bit!

Ground Squirrel

Second deer seen

Birds were everywhere!

Another ground squirrel posed for us

We chased this woodpecker for a while before we could catch his picture!

NPS Employee File Photo of Kaibab Squirrel - We saw it, but couldn't get the picture "clicked" fast enough!
We took a hike in the opposite direction on the Transept trail on July 16th and came across a beautiful view with a bench - great place to meditate on the magnificence of our creator!

On July 17th, we took the Widforss hike - 10 miles roundtrip.  The views at the end were totally worth the 5 1/2 hour hike!
Hiking through high mountain meadows full of wildflowers!

What a view!

How did those rocks get there?  Better question - how do they stay??
